South Austin Park is an
inappropriate location for a large tennis center
and the SATC expansion violates important planning
principles and highly publicized land-use objectives
such as those emphasized in the City of Austin Smart
Growth Initiative.
The Smart Growth Initiative recognizes that "environmental
protection and preservation of open space are essential
for the preservation of our quality of life..." and that "open
spaces serve our neighborhood and greater community
by promoting social and physical activity" (without
having to cut down trees).
The SATC expansion plan destroys the majority of functional
park space and threatens the safety of our children
by pushing them to the perimeter of the park near the
street. The SATC is only accessible via narrow residential
streets that have already been identified by city staff
as having traffic problems and detailed in recent story
on Fox 7 news.
Calculations based on PARD estimates show an increase
of at least 336 vehicle trips per day into our neighborhood.
This conservative projection does not take into
account the league and high-school tournaments planned
by the center which will include players and numerous
spectators. |
